What should I do when an ATM will not give me cash?

Short answer

First check whether the ATM declined the withdrawal, debited your account without cash, or kept the card. Keep the transaction details and contact the ATM operator and your issuer for the affected transaction.

What to do
  1. Record the ATM location, time, displayed error and any receipt.
  2. Check your account for a pending or completed debit.
  3. For missing cash or a retained card, contact the operator using its posted number and your bank through its official app or card contact.

If that doesn't work

  • If no money was taken from your account, try another ATM that shows “Global” or your card network’s logo. Bank ATMs can charge less than convenience-store ATMs.
  • Pay by card where it is accepted while you sort out the withdrawal.
  • If the ATM kept your card or cash is missing, call your card issuer’s overseas helpline to block or check the card.
Check before relying on this
  • Avoid repeated retries when a debit has appeared; do not accept help that requires revealing your PIN.
