What customs declarations and allowances apply to my belongings and gifts?

Short answer

Assess customs obligations on every entry, based on what you are bringing in that time. The general duty-free allowance is US$800 for qualifying taxable goods; gifts and expensive new purchases can count even when intended for someone else.

What to do
  1. Assess each entry separately: if nothing is declarable, Customs permits the no-declaration route; otherwise submit the declaration.
  2. Count qualifying taxable purchases and gifts against US$800 and keep receipts. Restricted goods still need their own permissions.
  3. For expensive Japan purchases destined for another country, declare the re-export intention or request Customs storage before clearing; do not assume a tax exemption from onward travel alone.
  4. For two laptops and an iPad, explain their personal/study use, ownership and planned re-export. Customs considers nature, quantity, value and use, rather than a universal one-device limit.
Check before relying on this
  • A later onward flight does not automatically exempt a high-value item brought landside.
  • Repeated entries do not remove the duty to reassess what must be declared.

Temporary personal effects and new gifts can be treated differently. If an item will leave again, ask about a temporary-import/re-export or bonded-storage procedure before passing Customs.
