How do I claim a tourist tax refund?

Short answer

Ask the participating store which refund process applies. Keep your purchase receipt and the required tax-refund documents until departure.

Missing a receipt or refund document? Ask the store or refund provider whether it can be issued, reissued or retrieved. This is not guaranteed.

Practical next steps

  1. If you only have an ordinary receipt, ask the original store whether the required refund document can be issued. If a document was issued and lost, ask the store or named refund provider about retrieval or reissue.
  2. Have purchase date, store, amount and available records ready. Do not assume a later issue, refund or reissue is guaranteed; follow the provider’s instructions before departure.

Missing your receipt or tax-refund document?

Ask the store or refund provider whether it can issue, reissue or retrieve your refund document. This is not guaranteed.

See steps for your situation
  1. If you only received an ordinary receipt, contact the same participating store with your purchase details.
  2. If your receipt or refund document is missing, ask the store or provider handling the purchase whether the required record can be retrieved or reissued.
  3. Follow the applicable refund and departure instructions if the required documents can be obtained.

An ordinary receipt alone may not be enough. The store, purchase and traveler must still qualify.

What to do
  1. Before paying, ask whether the store offers a tourist tax refund and whether you qualify. Have your passport ready.
  2. Keep your purchase receipt and the refund documents issued by the store. Follow its immediate-refund or later-refund instructions.
  3. If your refund process requires departure clearance at Incheon Airport, use the departure-hall refund kiosk and follow any customs inspection instruction. If the goods are in checked baggage, tell airline staff before handing over the bag and complete any required inspection first.

If that doesn't work

  • If the store did not give an immediate refund, keep its tax-refund document and claim at the refund kiosk in the airport departure hall before you leave.
Check before relying on this
  • Minimum purchase amounts, instant-refund limits and eligibility can change.
  • Do not assume every store or item qualifies, or that an ordinary receipt can be converted later.
  • For departure checks, keep refund goods unused and unopened. Customs inspection and receiving the refund are separate steps.
