Seoul Trail Route 1: Suraksan Mountain

A hard route from Dobongsan Station past the Seoul Iris Garden and along the slopes of Suraksan to the Danggogae Park fork. Its theme is “the path of people of old who never left the world behind”; it climbs and descends repeatedly, but from the observation decks you can see all the mountains around Seoul (official information).

Hard

Official Seoul Trail rating: level 3 of 3 (hardest)

Rating systems differ between pages. An official grade follows the operator’s own scale, so an “easy” route can still take over three hours. Compare routes by walking time and distance as well. Getting to and from stations is described separately in each route.

Good to know

  • Stamp boxes: the Seoul Iris Garden and the Danggogae Park fork. They are outdoors and the ink can dry out, so bring your own ink pad (official advice).
  • As a hard route it includes mountain paths. Wear shoes with good grip and carry water (KoreaClear advice).
  • Suraksan means “mountain of falling water”, after the water that tumbles down its great granite faces.
  • From the Quarry Observatory you can see Buramsan, Yongmasan, Achasan, Gwanaksan, Namsan and Bukhansan, with central Seoul in between (official information).
  • Near the start, a Seoul Trail Information Center on the ground floor of the Seoul Iris Garden building gives directions and issues completion certificates (official information).
