Can I rent a car and drive in Korea (including Jeju)?

Short answer

Yes, but you need BOTH an International Driving Permit AND your home driving licence โ€” one alone is not enough. You can drive for 1 year from the day you enter Korea. Carry both licences and your passport whenever you drive. Children under 6 must use a car seat.

What to do
  1. Before you leave home, get an International Driving Permit and pack your home driving licence too (you need both). Check neither expires during your trip.
  2. Book the car early, especially in peak seasons, and add a child car seat if a child under 6 is travelling with you.
  3. At pick-up, show your passport, International Driving Permit and home licence, take photos of the car and note the fuel level.
  4. While driving, carry both licences and your passport, and make sure everyone wears a seat belt.

  • Missing either the International Driving Permit or your home licence? You can't rent a car; use trains, buses or a taxi app instead.
