Will my foreign debit or credit card work in Korea?

Short answer

A foreign card may work for one merchant but fail for another, especially when online identity or payment checks differ. Check overseas use with your issuer and keep a backup.

What to do
  1. Confirm the card is active for overseas use and has available funds.
  2. If declined, ask whether the merchant accepts the card network and try the supported physical-card method.
  3. Contact the issuer with the error and transaction details before repeated attempts.

If that doesn't work

  • If the card is declined, pay with another card or cash, then contact the issuer before trying again.
  • If you need cash, use an ATM that shows “Global” or your card network’s logo.
Check before relying on this
  • Acceptance varies by merchant, payment system and card issuer. Keep a separate backup payment method.
