How can I reduce bedbug risk and respond if I find one?
Short answer
Inspect the bed area before unpacking, keep your luggage away from beds and the floor, and tell management promptly if you find suspicious signs. Winter travel is not a reason to skip these precautions.
What to do
- Check mattress seams, bed furniture and nearby cracks; photograph any suspected bugs or traces.
- If exposure is suspected at a hotel or sauna, keep affected belongings sealed and ask management how to move them safely.
- After travel, unpack away from the bedroom and inspect bags; wash and heat-dry suitable clothing according to its care label.
Check before relying on this
- Bites alone cannot identify a bedbug infestation.
- Plastic bags help isolate belongings but do not guarantee prevention. Do not spray hotel bedding or clothing with unapproved pesticides.

Practical details
Seoul’s guidance recommends inspection and physical control. The US EPA advises a household dryer on high heat for 30 minutes for clothing and bedding that can withstand it; washing alone may not be enough. Do not heat-treat delicate items without checking their labels. Individual travellers’ alleged experiences cannot establish a property’s current infestation status.
