Where am I allowed to smoke in Korea?
Short answer
Use a designated smoking area and follow posted local restrictions. National heritage sites, including royal palaces, are non-smoking throughout their premises.
What to do
- Use a clearly marked designated smoking area; for an unfamiliar venue ask staff where its smoking area is before lighting up.
- In Seoul, follow posted non-smoking boundaries at subway exits, bus stops, parks and other public places. Do not assume an outdoor location permits smoking; ask staff or use a marked smoking area.
- At national heritage properties, including royal palaces, do not smoke anywhere on the premises.
- Read the local sign and stay inside the permitted smoking-area boundary; do not assume every outdoor street or cafe terrace permits smoking.
Check before relying on this
- Check the signs at your location before smoking.
