What medical or travel insurance should I arrange for Korea?
Short answer
Choose insurance that covers your actual activities, pre-existing conditions and full time abroad. If you are applying for a working-holiday visa, follow the insurance rules of the Korean mission handling it (for example, the requirements for Canadian H-1 applicants).
What to do
- Check eligibility based on residence, maximum trip duration, employment/activities and all side trips.
- Confirm emergency treatment, evacuation/repatriation, exclusions, deductible and whether hospitals require upfront payment.
- For Canadian H-1, compare the policy certificate to the responsible mission’s required period and minimum cover.
Check before relying on this
- A policy being sold online does not mean you are eligible or every condition is covered.
- Keep a payment reserve and the insurer’s assistance number; direct billing requires confirmation.

Working-holiday insurance requirements
The Working Holiday Info Center lists health insurance valid throughout the stay with at least KRW 40 million cover. Canadian H-1 applicants must also check the responsible Korean mission’s current required insurance period and certificate wording before purchasing a policy. Do not assume a shorter planned trip permits a shorter policy.
