SIM Cards & Wi-Fi
Do I need a Korean phone number?
A fast answer first. Open the sections below if you need more detail.
Quick answer
Usually, no.
For maps and internet messages, data or roaming may be enough. Need local calls or texts? Choose a plan that explicitly supports them. A 010 number alone does not guarantee app verification.
Before buying, check these three things:
1. Data only or calls/texts?
2. Will your phone accept the SIM/eSIM?
3. Will the app you need accept this plan's number?
Where can I buy a SIM or eSIM?
- Before departureYou can arrange roaming with your home carrier or buy a travel eSIM online, including from a seller in your own country. Check whether it includes a Korean number; some plans include data only.
- At a Korean airportCarrier roaming centers and other sellers may offer SIMs or airport pickup. Check the actual seller and plan, not just the network name on the package.
- During your tripSome convenience stores and retailers sell physical SIMs. Stock and plan features vary.
You do not have to buy directly from SK Telecom, KT or LG U+. Third-party travel SIM/eSIM sellers and smaller carriers may offer different plans, sometimes using a Korean network.

- 1. List the apps and reservations you expect to use.Check whether any require a Korean number, a verification text, or a local outgoing call.
- 2. Compare the actual plan.Check that your phone is unlocked and supports the SIM or eSIM. Whether buying from a carrier, smaller provider or travel seller, check the network in Korea, whether you get a Korean number, and incoming/outgoing call and SMS support. The three direct-carrier pages below are useful examples, not a complete list of sellers.
- 3. Confirm the exact service at activation. If an app depends on SMS, ask the provider whether your chosen tourist plan supports that app's verification. Test the service before relying on it.
Important limits and exceptions
- A 010 number does not guarantee app verification. A plan may provide a number while restricting outgoing texts, payment messages or identity checks. Confirm the exact plan and app requirements before buying.
- Carrier conditions differ. KT says voice/SMS use requires an entry check at a KT airport roaming center. SK Telecom says calls and texts require passport information verification, outgoing use needs a top-up, and its tourist eSIM does not support personal authentication services or receiving payment texts. Check the terms of your actual plan and booking app.
- LG U+ example: Its data-only tourist SIM listing describes a 010 number but says SMS app verification and outgoing calls/texts are unavailable. Confirm incoming call and text support for the exact product before buying. LG U+ says its voice/SMS plan can verify some restaurant and taxi apps, but not banking or government identity. Confirm the exact product with the carrier.
