Do I need cash, and which ATM can I use?

Keep some Korean won as a backup. Check that an ATM supports your card before withdrawing.

SIMPLE ANSWER

Get some Korean won, but you do not need to carry a large amount.

💳 Use your card when it works

Keep cash as a backup rather than relying on only one payment method.

💵 Keep Korean won for T-money

Keep cash available and check the seller or machine’s accepted payment methods before buying or topping up your card.

🏧 Need more later? Use a Global ATM

Look for “Global” or international card-network logos on the ATM.

Practical next steps

  1. First separate “withdrawal declined” from “account debited but no cash”. For the second case, save the ATM location, operator, time, amount and receipt or transaction reference.
  2. Report the no-cash debit to the ATM operator and your issuer before another attempt. If nothing was debited, check withdrawal permissions, balance and limits with the issuer.

USING A FOREIGN CARD AT AN ATM

Look for “Global” or your card logo

1. Check the ATM first

ATMs that accept international cards commonly display a “Global” sign or the logos of supported international card networks.

2. Choose English

Many Korean ATMs provide foreign-language menus, including English.

3. Check the fee before confirming

ATM and home-bank fees can vary. Convenience-store ATMs may charge higher transaction fees than bank ATMs.

4. If a withdrawal fails, check with your card issuer first

Check overseas withdrawal settings and limits, then consider another supported ATM if no money was debited. See the problem steps below.

ATM withdrawal problem

My foreign card was declined. What now?

Check whether your account was debited. If money was taken but no cash came out, contact the ATM operator and your card issuer before trying again.

No money deducted

Check overseas withdrawal settings, limits and PIN with your issuer. Use another supported ATM or a backup method if needed.

Money deducted, no cash

Save the ATM location, time and transaction record. Contact the ATM operator and your issuer before retrying. A refund time cannot be guaranteed.

What to check and try
  1. Note the ATM location, time and error message. Do not share your PIN or full card details.
  2. Check the machine for your card-network logo. In your issuer's app or with your bank, check overseas cash withdrawals, daily limits, balance and PIN.
  3. If no money was debited, consider a different supported ATM or a backup payment method. Check fees before confirming another withdrawal.
  4. If money was debited but no cash came out, contact the ATM operator and your card issuer with the transaction details before retrying.
Limits and official sources

A “Global” sign does not guarantee your particular card will work. Your issuer is best placed to explain a card decline; the ATM operator can help with a machine problem. Bank or authorized exchange counters may be a cash alternative; confirm current service and fees.

IMPORTANT FOR T-MONEY

Do not assume your overseas Visa or Mastercard can top it up

Check payment methods at the retailer or charging machine. Keep Korean won available as a backup; buying the card, adding its travel balance and purchasing a different ticket or pass can have different payment options.

CASH EXCHANGE AT INCHEON AIRPORT

You can also exchange cash at the airport

Incheon Airport has bank currency-exchange counters in both terminals, with hours that vary by counter. Check the official facilities listing or ask an information desk before going, especially late at night.

Tip

You do not need to solve your entire trip's money needs at the airport. Get enough Korean won for your immediate transport and backup needs, then use cards or withdraw more later as needed.

REMEMBER THIS

Carry a backup payment method

Use cards when convenient, keep cash for transportation-card top-ups and backup, and use a Global ATM when you need more.
